"The work went very well. Site was well cleaned after work was complete. Wood was cut up into splitable-size for firewood. They also got rid of a squirrel's nest. Only negative comment is that there wasn't much notice that they were coming to do the work."

"they weren't he lowest quote, but gave good advice on what needed to be done. they were punctual, got the job done in 2 hours, and cleaned up after themselves."

Living with trees in the Pacific Northwest

Large trees like Douglas firs provide wonderful benefits for your yard, but the bigger they are, the harder they fall. A Seattle-area contractor offers tips to make sure your trees are healthy and not prone to falling over.

Lessons from the Bradford pear trees

Once mature, Bradford pear trees often split apart. (Photo courtesy of David Lusk of Lusk Tree Care Services)

Planted extensively in the ’80s and ’90s, the Bradford pear tree became a dominant feature in many subdivisions, on commercial properties and in parking lots. All was well until 15 or more years after planting.

How to plant a tree

'"Right Tree, Right Place’ should take into account the mature size of the tree, not the size you want it to be, as well as ensuring the soil, water, sunlight and climate factors are all favorable for the tree species you are planting,” says Wes Kocher of the ISA. (All photos by Mike LaFollette)

Planting a tree is an easy job, but it takes more skill than you might think. The following tree-planting tips can help ensure you plant a tree that thrives.

3 common tree diseases

Trees add both beauty and value to your property, but like all good things, they also have a downside. Diseases and other conditions can quickly turn a living, vibrant tree into a pile of dead wood.

"So far they have done excellent work. They came when they said they were going to. One negative is that they cut down one of the trees they weren't supposed to cut down. They acknowledged it was their mistake & made an accommodation in the work. They were very pleasant to deal with. They still need to come back. We are having incredibly awful weather so they will not be able to do anything until the snow goes away."

"The 'estimator' was very professional and friendly. I discussed what I wanted done and my concerns (branches growing near and around cable TV and electrical wires). The estimate was left with me to mail back once I decided I was going to use their services. The only problem I had was that they never called to set up an actual appointment for doing the trimming, and just showed up. I heard loud noises coming from the front of my house and realized they were trimming my tree! I already had an appointment that I had to leave for, so I wasn't there while they performed the work. I didn't think all of the branches were removed that were around the wires, and called them back. The estimator came back within a few days to discuss the situation with me. I still have not received a bill from them."

"Went very well. Took several days, due to weather. I was not at home, but could see progress every evening, after work. They worked on extremely hot days."

"Very good experience, although I had no direct contact with the owner other than speaking to him on the phone. I didn't have to be home at the time they did the work. What I can say is that I called for an estimate and left a message with my address. I had an estimate in my hands 2 days later. They were just as responsive when I called to request the work to be performed and their price was reasonable. I am pleased with how the trees look now and they didn't leave a lot of dead branches in the yard."

"We chose

because they had the equipment to do the job. The owner is very knowledgeable as he completed forestry school. They had to bring in a crane to lift the tree out of the area. The clean up was most impressive as there was not even a wood chip left behind. I am using the stump which is level with the ground to place flower baskets on."

has been around for quite some time in this area. They do good work at affordable costs for residents like me. If I need Maple tree work done again, I would call them back. They are quite punctual and reasonable in terms of what they charge clients."

, the owner was by far the lowest bid we received one was as high as $1250 for the job. He not only did a marvelous job with the removal, there were branches embedded three feet into the yard which he somehow got out. The clean up was immaculate; they even took away a large pile of branches by the side of the garage that had nothing to do with the work at hand. I highly recommend his integrity and wonderful service."

"They truly did everything to my satisfaction. This was a last minute scheduling. The business was very responsive by coming out the same day. The employees were very professional and courteous towards me."
