Tips to care for window treatments

Are your windows dressed to the nines? From the simplest shade to the most elaborate drape, here are some ways to keep your window treatments in tip-top shape.

  • Sunshine and dust are a pain in the pane to most curtains. Installing window film to block UV rays will help reduce fading while a gentle tug when closing your curtains will prevent dust from collecting.
  • Go with faux wood in the kitchen and bath. Real wood blinds will warp and start to smell like mildew in rooms with high humidity levels.
  • Read the label. Just like your favorite sweater, if it says dry-clean only, stick to the instructions. Know how to best care for your curtains based on the fabric.
  • If you're into vinyl — blinds that is — occasional light vacuuming with a brush attachment should keep them clean. Tackle severe soiling with a soft cloth and a mild detergent mixed with water.

I'm sorry, but there a few errors in the posting....1st, modern wood blinds can fully handle damp conditions such as a bathroom/kicthen. The "mold/warp" statement was made up by the cheaper window coverings companies as a excuse to promote PVC/Faux blinds and simply isn't true. Cleaning blinds...a mild detergent is fine...but it has to be a very high ration of water to cleaning agent with a rinse after. Detergent residue will attract dirt/dust and end up ruining the blind over time. Spot cleaning using this method is fine, but a professional service should be used for cleaning blinds with heavy soil....and also, if you are taking down the blinds to clean them, make sure to use a dustmask as mold spores and such can collect in the headrail, just waiting to be disturbed. :)
