Angie Hicks, Angie’s List founder: Today, consumers first instinct is to turn online to get information before they make a purchase decision whether it’s for services or products. But the important thing for consumers is – is the information reliable? Are they getting good information to make sure they are spending their dollars wisely? When consumers turn online to get information on services they might want to hire the first thing they want to do is understand how the site works. How are the reviews compiled? How do companies get listed on the site? These are all important questions for consumers. I’m completely against anonymous reviews because that leads to information not being reliable. Consumers are making too big of decisions based on information they read online and we need for people to be accountable for what’s being said. Remember online reviews are only part of your research. You still need to get three estimates, interview the company in person, and I always remind people – don’t ignore your gut instinct.”
Angie’s List Tips:
- Review the reviewers:
- Are the reviews anonymous?
- Do ALL the reviews seem too good to be true?
- Read the comments left on the company.
- Trust your instincts and continue to check with friends and family.
