Windshield crack blamed on Charlotte chip repair firm
COMPLAINT: Gary Melliere, Sherrills Ford, N.C.
My insurance company contracted with Safelite Auto Glass [11000 S. Commerce Blvd., Ste. H, Charlotte] to repair a chip in my windshield, which would've resulted in no out-of-pocket cost to me.
They showed up two-and-a-half hours late, despite providing a four-hour window to show up. When they called to schedule the appointment, they didn't mention I shouldn't leave the car outside in the heat. I left my car outside in the driveway so it'd be accessible.
At some point, the chip expanded to about a 10-inch crack. As a result, the windshield had to be replaced instead of repaired. This resulted in my having to pay a $250 insurance deductible.
When I called Safelite, the manager said there was nothing he could do because he couldn't know for sure whether the original chip could've been repaired or required replacement, even though it was only about the size of a thumb tack.
I recommended to the manager that we split the $250 deductible, which he refused to do. I sent e-mails to Safelite's customer service department, but I haven't heard back.
DESIRED RESOLUTION: I want them to reimburse me half of my deductible — $125.
