What to expect from laser tattoo removal

Sizing it up.

At the initial consultation, your laser specialist will determine if your tattoo can be successfully removed and how many treatments you might need. You may have to wait up to eight weeks between sessions, depending on how quickly your skin heals after treatment.

You should also learn how much each session will cost based on your particular tattoo.

Will it hurt?

Most people agree that laser treatments can be painful - often more than getting the original tattoo - and some compare the feeling to a rubber band snapping on your skin. However, applying a topical anesthetic, such as the prescription lidocaine-based cream EMLA, can help ease the sting during the procedure.

After the session.

Your skin will be somewhat raw and there may be some blistering. Apply an antibiotic cream, such as Neosporin, and cover the area with a bandage. You should be able to remove the bandage the next day and wash the area with soap and water.

Small scabs generally form in a day or two and should come off within about a week. Be aware that some who have laser removal may experience rare side effects that include allergic reaction, change in skin color and infection.

I actually just went last night to get my 12th Laser Tattoo Removal done. This has been over the course of the last 2 years going every 2-3 months. My tattoo was located on my ankle and was about 2"x4" filled with yellows, greens, purples and outlined in black. Before each session they put a topical cream on my tattoo that helps with the pain. I wouldn't say it numbs it like the doctors say it will. I would compare the pain to a curling iron hitting your skin accidentally over and over again. However over the course of the treatments it gets less and less painful. If you are thinking about getting a removal done be totally sure this is something that you will keep up with, because once you get started there is no turning back. If I stopped today it would look like I had a mutant glob on my leg. I have skin color change in some spots where the treatment is getting done due to the laser. I have been told that over time it will go back to normal after all the treaments are done. Minus the pain and time it has taken to get removed I am super excited to finally get this tattoo off my leg!

Be VERY sure before you get any visible tattoo. I'm a college professor of biology who has students wanting to become nurses. Our nursing program does NOT accept students with visible tattoos. Had one student last year spend at least $1500 to get one removed off of the back of her neck or she couldn't get into nursing school. Look before you leap!!
