Diagnostic dilemma
COMPLAINT: Virginia Anselmi, West Bend, Wis.
"My car was hesitating and jerking, so I took it to The Garage. They were supposed to do a diagnostic, a 10-point inspection and check the antifreeze. They replaced a transmission part and said I needed a new transmission. Their work didn't fix the problem - rather, it made the car worse.
"When I asked the manager if I received the inspection and antifreeze, he said he didn't take the call so he couldn't substantiate my request. I'm very displeased with this service. I took the car to another mechanic, who fixed it quickly and easily. It now runs beautifully."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like them to credit me for the diagnostic charge."

Third time not a charm
COMPLAINT: Michael and Karen Franklin, West Allis, Wis.
"We hired JPA Landscaping for a spring clean up of our yard. It was partially completed, but we paid in advance for lawn thatching and aeration; grading and erosion control; mulching of flower beds; spot seeding; and lawn treatments, all of which weren't done.
"All in all, we gave them over $500 in checks which were cashed. Repeated phone calls have gone unanswered, and the cell phone number we were given has been reassigned. For all intents and purposes, [John Antoszak, the owner] has vanished along with our $500."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want a $400 refund."
