Using a travel agent

Several travel agents on Angie's List share the benefits of using this service as well as the pitfalls of planning a trip without a professional agent.

If you have a large family or a family that consists of several different age groups, planning a trip can be a huge hassle. Without a travel agency to guide you, you may end up with a disaster for a vacation. Here are just a few things that can go wrong.

Boring vacation

Adults, teens and kids all have their own versions of fun and finding a place that encompasses everyone's ideal can be near impossible unless you are well versed in the location. With how busy people are these days, who has the time to research a location in depth? Your local travel agency does.

For example, if you are traveling to Atlanta, an Atlanta travel agent can find you a beachside resort that has splash playgrounds for the kids, scuba diving for the teens and fine dining for the adults. If there is a family history buff in your family, the agent could plan trips to the Atlanta Cyclorama, Atlantic Station and the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. This much easier easier than wandering around the city hoping to stumble upon a fun attraction that will entertain your family.

Cramped quarters

Even if you don't have a big family, larger accommodations or multiple rooms may be vital to your sanity. Teens will want privacy, Mom and Dad may need some quiet time and kids will want a little space to themselves during longer trips. Travel agencies can find hotels that have adjoining rooms or a suite that includes several separate bedrooms. Doing this yourself may result in the kids having a room on a different floor than your room.

No babies allowed

Imagine arriving at your cruise ship and being turned away because you have a baby. This can actually happen since some cruise ships won't allow babies that are under a certain age on board. Even if your child is a bit older, you can still have problems. Some resorts and other vacation destinations are adult-only. Finding this out when you arrive would be less than pleasant, especially if your booking is non-refundable. A travel agent can help you avert baby and child crises before they arrive.

There are many things that can take your average vacation plans and turn them into chaos. Thankfully, there are professional trip planners who can take the hassle out of planing and let you actually relax on your family vacation.
