Tips for travel upgrades: Hotel stays
Depending on the time of year and the situation, many hotels may have a number of unsold rooms at higher levels than the one you booked originally. Most hotels are even willing to offer travel upgrades to these rooms for no extra charge. Word of mouth is the best advertisement, and what better advertisement than a pleased customer who not only enjoyed his hotel stay but also the perks of an upgraded hotel room.
Hayley Whorrall, owner of an Indianapolis travel agency, Beach Bum Vacations, suggests that travelers vacation during off-peak season or during the mid-week. "If you select off-peak dates or travel during the midweek, then your chances of receiving a complimentary upgrade is greater because occupancy is typically lower at hotels during this time." Whorrall also suggested that "travelers speak up if they've had or are having a negative experience. Report your issue to a manager the moment it's happening. Many hotels will look to rectify the situation by offering you a complimentary upgrade."
Stay loyal
Choose a hotel brand and sign up for its loyalty/rewards membership program. By doing this, you will earn great perks that can include free nights and a complimentary upgrade.
Special occasions
Are you celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or birthday? If so, these are special occasions that could permit an upgrade. Let the hotel clerk know during the check-in process and ask for an upgrade politely. Hotel staff members usually do not mind going out of their way to make their guests' special occasions even more memorable.
Appearance
Appearance makes a difference. You should be well-groomed and wearing attractive clothing. As superficial as it may seem, a professional and polished image will increase your likelihood of getting room travel upgrades while traveling.
Be sure to check-in during the hotel's standard check-in time for greater chances of getting an upgrade. The later you arrive in the day, the greater the chance that the hotel has filled up its unused inventory. This includes higher-class rooms.
