COMPLAINT: Stacy Field, Indianapolis
"I hired Markin's to install a wrought-iron security door in my garage. After the installation, the door didn't fit and water leaked around its windows. They reinstalled the windows, which appeared to fix the problem - until it rained again.
I called and they said this was the best they could do. After this, I also noticed that the door is pitted and rusted. I called and they were to send someone out to re-evaluate the door. I never heard back. I called again, and they informed me [the problem] was with the door's quality and there was nothing they could do.
The only explanation they gave was: 'Steel doors are going to rust.' The door is only six months old. They're not standing behind their services."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want a new door that fits and won't rust. If they cannot provide that, I want them to refund my money in full."
RESPONSE: Connie Hawkins, sales manager, Markin's
"We carry a 30-day service warranty and the member's is [expired]. Our limited one-year warranty doesn't include labor or service calls. We have three signatures [that indicate] customer satisfaction."
COMPLAINT: Curtis McPhail, Indianapolis
"I hired Affordable Roofing and Home Improvements to tear off and replace my roof. They also replaced my gutters. After they completed the project, it took several calls to have them clean up.
Also, they didn't install the flashing when they were supposed to, but they finally came and did that work. Later, I noticed yellow spots all over my kitchen walls, ceilings and floors. After inspecting them, I realized the roof was leaking. I talked to them on a Monday, and they said they'd be out on Wednesday.
They didn't show, and then their secretary called to let me know they weren't able to make it. I never heard back from them. I've left messages, but no one returns my calls."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want them to repair my roof and repaint my kitchen ceiling."
STATUS: Penalty box
COMPLAINT: Vincent Wong, Indianapolis
"I hired Pro Approach Lawn Service last summer for work, including installing a paver patio, building a retaining wall, landscaping my side yard and laying sod. They did a nice job with the paver patio and the retaining wall.
However, they made a critical, very expensive error. They failed to grade the side yard and landscaping so that water runs away from the house.
Therefore, I'm having serious water problems in my basement. I've called Pro Approach on several occasions, and they acknowledged this was a serious problem and that they'd correct it. Over a month has passed, and they still haven't fixed it. I just invested $3,000 to waterproof my basement thinking this might solve the issue, but I'm still having water problems.
This is 'Landscaping 101' and they failed it. Worse yet, they've failed to correct the problem despite their promises to do so."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want Pro Approach to regrade my side yard so water drains away from the house and doesn't leak into my basement and foundation."
