Silent alarm
COMPLAINT: Alma L. Matthes, St. Louis
"I asked Monitronics International to install a smaller keypad on my older alarm system. They did, but now I cannot hear the alarm when it goes off. They said they gave me the service completely free of charge, but I thought I'd get an alarm I could hear.
"One time it went off while I was sleeping, and they called to tell me. They told me if I bought a different battery, it would be louder, but it isn't. I'm unhappy with the service. I begged them to let me out of my contract, but they won't.
"If I really need them, I can't get service right away. What good is it to have the service if I can't get them to come here? I've called them 18 to 20 times, each time speaking to different people. I just want a monitored alarm system I can hear."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "Since we cannot reach an agreement, I'd like to terminate the contract."
STATUS: Stalemate
Editors note: Matthes says Monitronics offered to release her from the contract if she paid her account balance in full. She declined and considers the issue unresolved.
