Spring is perfect time for roof maintenance and repairs
Submitted by J. Benson Construction
After snow and ice accumulates on rooftops during winter, homeowners face some specific challenges come springtime. Some experience damage from ice dams that were removed and required water damage repairs. Spring is the time to take care of water damage. Don’t put off repairs. If you do, your insurance company may not cover them. Call your insurance agent and get an estimate from a licensed contractor. It’s usually best to wait to file a claim until you have an estimate.
Spring is also a good time to fix the insulation in your attic, as poor ventilation contributes to ice dam formation. It’s also the time to fix any roof damage you have, particularly if the ice dam was removed improperly. Most of the time, it’s pretty obvious if you need to make repairs or preventative maintenance. If you’re not sure, call a qualified, licensed contractor to come out and inspect the questionable areas. Most companies don’t charge for this, and it gives you the opportunity to get an estimate. If you’re not sure if the contractor is licensed, ask for their license number. It may cost a little more to use a licensed contractor, but it’s worth the peace of mind, warranties and professionalism that go along with it.
To avoid a bad experience, it’s important to do your research before hiring a contractor. Ask your insurance agent to provide recommendations. Another good place to look is on websites like Angie’s List, where consumers can post reviews. Many companies will also provide references and testimonials upon request.
Make sure you do your homework. Just because a company’s website looks appealing doesn’t necessarily mean the company does good work. Repair costs can become greater if you hire the wrong company. Be sure to hire a qualified, licensed general contractor. Other than your insurance agent, other professionals that may be a good source of recommendations for contractors include Realtors, landscape architects, plumbers and housing inspectors.
