Removing common carpet stains

Removing common carpet stains

Carpet stains are an annoying and inevitable problem plaguing many homeowners. Regardless if the stains were caused by a pair of muddy shoes, a spilled glass of red wine or an over-excited pet, they always seem to find a way into carpets.

Fortunately, there are ways that you can remove these stains on your own. It all depends on where the stain came from, and the method used to remove it.

1. Dirt, grime and mud. Dirt and mud are some of the most common stains found in carpets, and fortunately, they are usually the easiest to remove. Allow the mud or dirt to dry thoroughly before you try to clean the spot.

Scrubbing the stain while it’s still wet can drive it deeper into the carpet. Once the stain is dry, you can use a vacuum to remove the dirt. Then use a damp terry cloth to scrub the area. Allow the area to dry once more and then vacuum again.

2. Pet stains. The hardest part of eliminating pet stains is getting rid of the odor. Soak the area thoroughly with a mixture of baking soda and water and then quickly press a towel into the area to absorb the moisture. Repeat the process until the stain and odor is gone.

3. Soda stains. Soda stains require immediate action due to their high acidic content. The acid loosens the fibers of the carpet and allows the stain to quickly settle in for a long stay.

Clean these spots immediately by absorbing all of the liquid with a heavy towel. Follow by scrubbing the area thoroughly with a mixture of dish soap and water.

4. Juice and wine stains. These stains can also be very damaging if they are left to settle in your carpet. Besides being dark in color, fruit-based liquids are also very acidic. Using a rag or towel, you want to soak up as much of the wine as possible, and then pour cold water over the stain to dilute it.

Then, apply the towel again to soak up the remaining water. Once you have diluted the stain, mix a paste of baking soda and water and allow it to dry over the stain. The paste should be vacuumed up once it has thoroughly dried.

Carpet stain removal is frustrating, but rest assured that most stains can be eliminated using things you already have in your home. If you have a large area to clean, or you are worried about damaging your carpet, consider calling in a professional.
