Quality work earns Matthews painting company honors

Matthews, N.C.
Scott Sanders has been in business for six years, and while he’s expanded his business to do a variety of home improvement work, Sanders says interior painting is still his bread and butter. “It’s the whole reason I started this business,” he says.
When it comes to customer satisfaction, Scott Sanders may not agree that the customer is always right, but he does believe he and his crew should do everything they can to make sure the customer's happy.
"I tell my employees quality first," Sanders says. "We'll make money later." He also says he strives to do grade A work. "I'm not satisfied with getting a B," he says.
Sanders, 48, who is not required to have a trade license, says when he gets a call from an Angie's List member, they're usually eager to start their project.
"They want quality, reliability and are ready to make a hiring decision because they've done their homework on the List," he says.
He also says he's conscientious about scheduling and tries not to take on too much work. "When you're worried about getting to the next job, the quality [on the current job] can suffer," he says.
Mary Jane Gommel hired Sanders to paint her two-story foyer, hallways, family room and a bedroom. She says she's hired painters before, but none that have gone out of their way to do a great job like Sanders.

"He fixed things that weren't even on my list and had the initiative to make them right," Gommel says. She also says he was very detail oriented in patching and prepping her walls and did a beautiful, professional job.
The three-time Super Service Award winner cites prep work as the most important aspect of a good painting job. He also explains to his six employees the importance of consistency in getting the job done right.
While he manages more than he paints, he expects his crew, whose ages range in the mid-20s, to keep up with him on the job.
"When an extra man is needed, I'm out there. The best way to lead is by example," Sanders says.
