Put grill on a pad to protect a deck, power washer says

How should you build a new deck?

"Your most durable, long-lasting decking materials would be composite decking, which requires just a yearly power washing and lasts for up to 25 years or more. It's made of recycled materials engineered to resist rot and generally requires little more than a good cleaning from time to time.

"For those on a tighter budget, or for those who prefer the look and feel of wood, I would recommend pressure treated wood, which is more resistant to wood-boring insects and rotting.

"Depending on the size and materials you choose, constructing a new deck can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Using the appropriate materials and employing the proper construction techniques will ensure that you get the most out of your deck in the years to come."

What are the proper ways to maintain a deck?

"If you maintain your deck properly, you should be able to enjoy it for quite some time.

"Decks should be power washed annually using products specifically engineered to clean wood or composite decking. You should also regularly remove leaves, brush and other debris from your deck to ensure that staining does not occur.

"Decks are most prone to damage at the tops of handrail boards, stairways, doorways and any other high traffic areas. Another damage prone area would be underneath your grill. You should definitely have a pad under the grill to catch grease and other debris that may fall from it.

"Harsh weather, insects and high traffic can all compromise the life of your deck. However, regular cleaning and sealing can significantly decrease the negative effects these threats can impose.

"As time passes, a deck's integrity will be compromised. Eventually, you will begin to see signs of decay such as rotting boards, unsightly discolorations and other negative effects caused by weathering, and general wear and tear.

"As long as you feel comfortable and have some basic hand tools, you can do several simple repairs that will prolong the life of your deck. Repairs such as hammering down popped nails; replacing warped, loose or rotting boards; and securing loose handrails are easy to complete and generally don't require a professional craftsman.

"However, anytime you don't feel comfortable completing the job, call a professional. Generally, little preparation is needed other than clearing the area to be restored of any unnecessary clutter."
