Portland roofing job fails during first winter winds
COMPLAINT: Nancy Graybeal, Corbett, Ore.
"Mt. Hood Roof Restoration Inc. replaced my roof's storm-damaged shingles, tore off the ridge vents on two gables and replaced them with flat shingles, and fixed a damaged ridge cap. When the work was originally done, I was very satisfied.
Penalty box

Didn't respond to Kevin Hillegass' request to repair his airbag and spiral spring, which he says weren't working after taking his car in for service. Second month in the box.
Patrick Ogborn
Didn't respond to Victor Wassgren's request for a refund for roof work he says wasn't done to his satisfaction. Second month in the box.
Circuit City [Tigard]
Didn't respond to Henry Hathaway's request for a partial refund for some computer work he says he doesn't think he should have to pay for. First month in the box.
However, the first test of the repair quality didn't occur until after the first winter windstorm. I lost many strips of shingles in places where repairs were made. They'd told me to call if there were any problems, and I called immediately, but they didn't show up for the first two commitments they made.
I didn't receive a call saying they weren't coming and they haven't returned my last call."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like them to come out and fix the damaged shingles as soon as possible, at their cost. I need a written guarantee that if the repaired shingle areas fail a second time within five years, I can hire a company of my choice to repair the damaged shingles at their cost."

COMPLAINT: Linda Buss, Lake Oswego, Ore.
"I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my in-laws from Teleflora. I wanted it delivered about a week later. The flowers arrived two days late - after numerous calls to the company. When I discovered the flowers hadn't arrived the day after they were supposed to, I called Teleflora and requested a bouquet be delivered promptly.
They promised me it would be delivered that day. I called my in-laws the next day, and they still had no flowers. I called Teleflora back that day and asked for delivery, as well as a confirmation call from the florist. My in-laws called back that evening to say the flowers had been delivered.
I never got a call from the florist or an explanation for the delay from Teleflora."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want my money back. Teleflora refunded me $9, but I want a full refund of $58."

COMPLAINT: John Moeller, Newport, Ore.
"Lost Lodge Timber sold me post and beam timbers salvaged from dismantled barns to be installed in my home as part of a restoration project. After delivery, I washed them and discovered they were riddled with termite and powderpost beetle holes.
Powderpost beetles are a group of woodboring beetles whose larvae feed on wood, reducing it to powder. Females may lay their eggs in the wood, continuing the cycle of infestation.
When I called Steve Herrick, the owner, to discuss this, he admitted he knew about the damage. He told me all their salvaged timbers had beetle damage and said I shouldn't worry, that it wouldn't spread to the rest of my house.
He's since refused to discuss the return of the beams and the refund of my money. They aren't returning e-mails or calls, and the contractor I scheduled a month ago to install the beams has left for other jobs.
One of the timbers, which I paid $280 for, was never delivered."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like Lost Lodge to pick up the timbers from my home and refund the full cost of $2,075."
RESPONSE: Steve Herrick, owner, Lost Lodge Timber
"Lost Lodge Timber did try to resolve the issue. We've been in contact via phone and e-mail. The member refused our offer of kiln drying or to do an exchange for another product.
The member was present at delivery and helped unload each of the timbers by hand. He inspected them and was very satisfied. We inspected them before selling them and found no evidence of current powderpost activity.
The member acid-washed the timbers, which altered their original condition and look. It's our policy to offer an exchange providing the material is returned in its original condition. Despite this, we did offer to do an exchange, which the member refused. We did fail to deliver one of the timbers and agreed to deliver it at a later date.
We've given him a full refund for this timber."
