Portland area expert bathtub refinishers discuss techniques

What services do you offer?

Dan Ness: "We refinish tubs and showers - fiberglass, metal, plastic, porcelain and tile."

Dennis Paulus: "Bathtub and tile refinishing and claw foot tub restoration."

Mike Flynn: "We also sell tubs and hardwood plumbing for antique tubs."

What's the advantage of refinishing a tub rather than replacing it?

Dan Ness: "To replace a bathtub, you have to tear the entire bathroom apart. It isn't cheap."

Dennis Paulus: "Price."

Mike Flynn: "Usually it's cost-saving, and it's more convenient, too."

Are there any type of tubs you can't refinish?

Dan Ness: "No. We can do them all."

Dennis Paulus: "No, not really. There are certain things that shouldn't be done more than once, like fiberglass."

Mike Flynn: "Not really."

What's the average price range?

Dan Ness: "A standard built-in bathtub runs $450. There are variables on top of that."

Dennis Paulus: "It varies, depending on repair work and stuff like that. A tub starts at $275."

Mike Flynn: "It's about $400 to $600. There can be a few variables."

How long does the refinishing process take?

Dan Ness: "It takes two days. The first day usually runs about five hours, and the second day is about two."

Dennis Paulus: "On a basic tub with no repair, about two or two and a half hours."

Mike Flynn: "Six to eight hours."

What type of paint do you use and what colors can people choose from?

Dan Ness: "Basically it's an acrylic urethane. We can do any color."

Dennis Paulus: "It's an acrylic-based product. I offer white and different shades of almond. If people want specialty colors, I can order them."

Mike Flynn: "Urethane over epoxy. They can choose from any plumbing company's colors."

How far in advance should customers call you to schedule service?

Dan Ness: "Usually three or four days."

Dennis Paulus: "They need to call at least two weeks ahead to get the appointment they want."

Mike Flynn: "Right now, three or four weeks."

Is it true that refinishing a bathtub has a strong odor? What do you do to help alleviate this?

Dan Ness: "We ventilate with a special fan."

Dennis Paulus: "I have an exhaust fan with a tube I take out an extra door or window."

Mike Flynn: "We use a big fume exhauster."
