Pet doors in walls take longer to install

I'm looking for a company or contractor that would install pet doors. What kind of company should I be looking for, and what should I expect out of the job?Angie's List Member Hector Sosa

A handyman service can usually do the job in one or two hours, says Ryan Goetz, president of  highly rated Handyman Connection in Golden Valley, Minn.

"It really depends on the type of pet door and what kind of door you're installing it in," he says. "There are a lot of variables on these jobs. If you're installing it in a wall, it's likely to take longer, since you have lots of other issues to deal with, like structures and electrical wires."

Tom Larson, a technician with highly rated Cady Handyman Services in Minneapolis, says the average installation costs between $150 and $200, not counting the cost of the pet door itself, which the customer usually purchases.

"Once you put it in, you'll caulk both sides, then make sure the door is sealed and closes nice and tightly on the bottom," Larson says.

"I'd recommend checking the flap and caulking every three or four months, especially in cold weather, to see if there's any air coming in. If so, you may need to have it recaulked or replaced."
