Pet doors pose security risks

I'm looking for a company or contractor that would install pet doors. What kind of company should I be looking for, and what should I expect out of the job?  Angie's List member Hector Sosa

For between $250 and $500, most handymen can install a pet door into a wall or an existing metal or wood door, says Ron Lowe, owner of highly rated Handyman Matters in Worthington, Ohio, which also services portions of Columbus.

The less costly method, however, is to install it into an existing door. "Avoid installation into any custom-molded doors, because if they're worth a few thousand dollars, it will be harder to replace," Lowe says. "Also, if you remove a pet door out of a wall, your repair costs will be more expensive."

For security purposes, Lowe suggests installing a pet door into an interior door leading to your garage so you can close the garage door and keep out intruders when it's not in use. "Pet doors, especially those for large dogs, on back doors are a security risk," Lowe says.

As for the potential energy loss caused by a pet door, he says caulking around the trim will help reduce this factor. Another option is to purchase a high-tech electronic pet door controlled by a sensor activated by the pet's collar and only opens when the pet is nearby.
