Pet doors offer enhanced security features
"I'm looking for a company or contractor that would install pet doors. Where should I have the door installed, and what should I expect out of the job?" — Angie's List member Hector Sosa
Pet doors can be installed in a door or a wall, says Joe Santucci, owner of A-rated House Doctors - Handyman & Home Improvements in Leesburg, Va.
An experienced handyman should be able to do the job, he says, adding that an average installation takes two to three hours. "It can be complicated depending on where the door is installed," he says.
Santucci says fire-rated doors, which can include garage doors, should not be altered to accommodate a pet door because they lose their safety rating if penetrated.
He says the homeowner or installer can purchase the door, but if you buy one, select a quality product. Once installed, Santucci says it's important to make sure the pet door is properly caulked with waterproof silicone or acrylic caulk to prevent damage from moisture penetration.
Look for doors that offer enhanced security features, he says. Other pets you do not want to get out are the biggest concern. "Select a locked door that only opens with a collar on the pet," he says.
