New appliance agitates Indianapolis homeowner
COMPLAINT: Ellen Armbruster, Indianapolis
"I built a new house and ordered appliances [from General Electric] online. The appliances were installed when I moved in. The first time I used the front-loading washer, my son thought we were experiencing an earthquake.
"GE came to my home and confirmed that it was level and installed per the instructions. The serviceman's official determination, after seeing it shake the house, is that the washer was 'operating as designed.'
"The servicemen [who came] told me that the design is the problem and they see this all the time.
"The washer shakes with such force that it moves the entire first floor, breaking things in cabinets and moving furniture. My builder told me not to operate it because it will damage the floor joists and walls.
"GE tried a myriad of excuses, even suggesting I move it to the garage. I bought the top-of-the-line washer and dryer, and vibration-control pedestals.
If there's no problem, why are servicemen told to suggest removing the pedestals, putting plywood underneath, or moving it to a concrete floor? I tried to return the set and get a top-loading washer, though that's not what I want - I wanted the front-loading washer's water savings.
"They made me an offer that amounted to me paying for a new top-loader, losing most of my money on the front-loader and its pedestal, and having mismatched appliances.
"I shouldn't have to settle for a less efficient, mismatched set and lose money. They need to stand behind their product."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want to return the washer and dryer for a refund."
STATUS: Penalty Box.
