Let a LA roofing contractor fix buckling shingles
If you notice that the shingles on your roof are buckling, puckering and curling, it may be time to call a Los Angeles roofing professional to address the problem.
Roofing issues, such as buckling, can be caused by a number of issues, including:
Improperly applied felt. When the paper barrier, known as tar paper or felt, is installed incorrectly, it can buckle. It must first be stretched and applied to the roof plywood. If this is not done, the felt will rise, inadvertently causing the shingles to buckle.
Wrinkled underlayment. If the adhesive side of the underlayment, which usually is used around high moisture areas, is not properly laid, it won't be flat. Moisture could penetrate, thus causing additional problems.
No spacers. Spacers must be used during proper installation of roof decking, as they keep the wood from swelling. The wood will move according to weather. Without the assistance of the spacers, the shingles will buckle under the movement.
New shingles applied over old shingles. This is never recommended. Always take the old shingles off or you will experience the same issues.
Poor ventilation. Without ventilation, the roof will retain moisture. The moisture will soon turn into condensation, which damages the frame of the house and the roof decking. As the condensation rises, it will warp the shingles from below.
Buckling isn't always caused by something the installer has done wrong. Nails may pop out over time, and normal seasonal fluctuations that cause swelling and condensing can contribute to buckling.
Try preventing buckling shingles by:
- Ensuring proper attic ventilation by using exhaust fans or additional venting.
- Removing and replace affected shingles.
- Adjusting the spacing of the affected shingles.
- Removing shingle fasteners and replace with new fasteners along with new shingles.
Buckling, however, may lead to more serious problems. A professional roofing contractor may be in order as further damage to the shingles can be a critical problem after seasonal elements. Search Angie’s List to find a Los Angeles roofing contractor who will remedy the problem correctly, saving you the cost of damage in the future.
