The importance of walking your dog

Submitted by Janet Jorgensen, owner of Starbarks Canine

Walking your dog is the very first thing you should do when you become a canine owner. That first walk, whether he is a puppy or not, tells him that you are the leader. It starts the relationship on the right paw from day one.

Walk your dog before he ever enters your house. Before you go inside, stand at the doorway. Make the dog wait, and then bring the dog inside. This tells him it is your house, not his. He’ll respect you and the house more.

Every dog needs a leader. It’s a part of their DNA. If they don’t have one, they will take over. The end result can be disastrous. Canines need to walk to experience, be social and meet people so that they can lead balanced and healthy lives.

Starbarks Canine Village has been educating owners to train their dogs for more than 25 years. Starbarks Canine can help you pick the right dog or puppy for your family and teach you how to be a great leader.
