How to remove wax from carpet

How to remove wax from carpet

If you have spilled wax on your carpet, check out these easy steps to remove it from carpet fibers with as little hassle and damage as possible:

1. Allow the wax to cool.

Once the wax has been spilled on the carpet, allow it to cool. Attempting to remove the hot liquid wax from carpet fibers can actually spread it further around or deeper into the carpet fibers. Although it may seem like a good idea to try to get the wax out of the carpet while it is still in liquid form, it is much easier to allow it to cool and harden into a solid.

2. Remove large chunks.

You can use a piece of silverware like a fork, spoon or knife to remove larger pieces of the wax from your carpet. Be careful not to use sharp knives, as they can damage the carpet fibers. Also, be sure not dig too deeply into the carpet fibers while attempting to remove the wax, as you may damage the carpet's backing.

3. Vacuum up the remaining loose pieces of wax.

Use a vacuum cleaner to vacuum up any remaining loose pieces of wax that are around the area. This is essential to getting up the excess wax so it does not get worked deeper into carpet during the next part of the procedure.

4. Get a brown paper bag and a clothes iron.

Get a brown paper bag and place it over the remaining wax trapped in the carpet. Make sure that the brown paper bag is covering the entire wax spill.

Next, plug in the clothes iron and turn the heat to a low setting. Once it's warmed up, run the iron across the paper bag, being careful not to apply too much pressure, as the combination of heat and pressure can damage the carpet.

5. Repeat as necessary.

Lift the bag up from the carpet and you should see a dark stain from where the wax has attached to it. Look over the carpet to see if there is still wax on the fibers. If they're still wax on the carpet you may need to repeat this process a few more times.

Get a new paper bag and repeat the procedure in order to remove the excess wax from your carpet. Once all of the wax has been removed from the carpet, use a vacuum to clean the surface one last time.

6. Call a professional.

If the stain or damage from spilled candle wax is too extensive for this DIY solution, you're likely better off calling a professional carpet cleaner. From applying industry methods to removing the wax to possibly replacing the damaged carpet area itself, a well qualified carpet cleaning company will likely have the skills, training and experience to renew your carpet.
