Pet urine can be one of the most difficult stains to remove from carpet.

This is because the stain usually penetrates not only the top layer of the carpet pile, but all the way into the carpet’s backing and into the carpet padding. Left untreated, or treated incorrectly, the odor caused by the high pH in urine from a pet stain, especially those from cats, can persist almost indefinitely.

Some carpet cleaners have products available that can neutralize the odors by being applied in a manner that allows the product to be absorbed all the way into the carpet backing and padding – which may help neutralize the odors. Other carpet cleaning companies will use a deep-penetrating extraction method that will ensure the cleaning machine’s solution reaches the padding.

However, in extreme cases, where the carpet has been soaked heavily with pet urine and the contamination has reached the padding or even the subfloor, a pet urine stain may be permanent and replacing the carpet and/or padding may be the only cost-effective solution.

One DIY method some carpet cleaners may recommend is to use a mixture of one-half vinegar to one-half water. This will help neutralize the high pH found in pet urine. However, it’s important to treat the stain correctly.

If the stain is recent, blot up as much excess liquid as possible with towel or rag, never rub the problem, as this may set the stain deeper. After applying the vinegar-water mixture, or an over-the-counter product such as Nature’s Miracle or Biokleen to counteract the stain, blot up any excess liquid and lay a heavy towel over the area and let it dry.

Carpet cleaners regularly differ in opinion as to which pet stain removal method is most effective. If your carpet stain requires the aid of a professional, be sure to call multiple companies and ask that they explain their stain removal method.
