How to get red wine stains out of your carpet

Red wine is a fantastic compliment to a gathering, but it can ruin your carpet. The clearly marked edges and deep color can leave you wondering if your carpet will ever be clean again. Fortunately, there are ways to effectively remove these stains.

Gently blot
Start with clean, white rags and gently blot up as much of the wine as possible. Don’t rub it, just gently press on the towel until all the liquid is absorbed. White paper towels can be used to get down into the nap and remove the last little traces.

Self-clean
There are many products on the market for cleaning small carpet stains. Test a small area of carpeting before using all over your house, as carpet materials will react differently to chemicals.

Follow the directions on the product, which will usually instruct you to spray the stain, let it sit then rub or rinse it clean. Be careful of products with oxygen-activated ingredients, as they have been known to permanently fade and discolor carpeting.

Hydrogen peroxide with baking soda
Once you have blotted up all the liquid wine, spray peroxide on the residual stain. Be sure to exceed the perimeters of the stain with the hydrogen peroxide. Follow with a heavy sprinkling or baking soda over the area.

Allow it to sit and then rinse the entire area with clean water. This home-made carpet cleaner is highly effective but it should not be allowed to sit on the carpet for extended periods of time.

Club soda
Club soda is effective on clothes and can also remove stains on carpet. It will help remove the stain from the carpet fibers, allowing the residual wine to be blotted up along with the soda.

Call in a professional
If you have a stubborn stain, it might be time to have your entire carpet cleaned by a Los Angeles carpet cleaning professional. A professional carpet cleaner has access to equipment and chemicals that aren’t available to the general public.

Not only will they get the wine cleaned out of your carpet, but they can also make the carpet in the entire room look brand-new.

From March to September 2011, Angie’s List members searched the List for highly rated Los Angeles carpet cleaners more than 2,800 times. Carol Nuccitelli hired highly rated Bobcat Carpet & Fabric Care of Los Angeles to clean the carpeting in all upstairs rooms of her house.

“The stairs and rooms looked great,” she says of the recent cleaning. “Not a spot to be seen.”
