How to clean hairspray buildup on bathroom surfaces

The right hairspray will add the finishing touch to any hairdo, holding every strand perfectly in place. Though it’s a good styling aid, its sticky consistency can harden and adhere to bathroom surfaces, causing a buildup that can be difficult to remove. While it might cause an extra task during your regular bathroom cleaning, two highly rated house cleaning professionals share tips on how to get rid of the residue.

Cleaning solution for removing hairspray

Teresa Cleary, owner of First White Glove in Chicago, mainly uses natural cleaning products in her clients’ homes. Her go-to solution is a mixture of Castile soap and baking soda. The Chicago house cleaner says to mix Castile – which comes in a liquid – with the baking soda until a paste-like substance is created. It can then be used to clean just about any bathroom surface.

Rick Sicro, of Holly Maids in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., says homeowners need to be careful around natural stone, as some cleaners and liquids can cause damage to the porous surfaces. On durable countertops, mirrors or other bathroom surfaces, Sicro says a simple solvent remover from any local hardware store should remove hardened hairspray.

Cleaning hairspray from walls

If trying to remove buildup from bathroom walls, Sicro says it’s important to know what kind of paint the walls were painted with.

“If it’s on a painted surface you have to be careful because if you have a water-based paint even just normal water would be a problem,” he says.

To safely clean painted walls – or other surfaces throughout your house – the house cleaning professional recommends using white eraser sponges, available at most grocery and home improvement stores.

“Those things are pretty amazing,” Sicro says. "They'll actually remove just about anything without removing the paint."
