Homeowner takes issue with home inspection
COMPLAINT: Cheryl Costner, Dublin, Ohio
"I hired America's Home Inspections of Columbus [Ohio] for a routine home inspection prior to purchasing my home. I'm now faced with potentially thousands of dollars of repairs for items that the inspector missed.
"He did not flag a microwave that had rust and a hole in it, so it caught on fire the first time I used it. He failed to see obvious water damage outside the master shower; it leaks terribly after every use. He failed to recognize that a sump pump wouldn't work after being plugged in. I have water in the basement and drains that will need to be dug up and replaced.
"There are also eight doors that do not shut or latch properly, of which he only flagged two. One door will require a carpenter to completely re-install it. He did come back to revisit the property, but he dismissed my concerns."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I would like a full $420 refund for the home inspection."
STATUS: Resolved
Editor's note: Rick Schaffer, owner of America's Home Inspections, agreed to refund Costner 50 percent of the home inspection fee. Costner accepted and considers the matter closed.
