Installing a garage door without professional help may seem like reasonable thing to try. The Internet offers boundless information on do-it-yourself garage door installation tips that make it seem like an easy task for any homeowner.

In reality, garage door installation entails a massive amount of physical work, attention to detail and mechanical ability. Before attempting a DIY installation, consider the following risks.

Garage doors are loaded with heavy-duty springs, making installation an extremely dangerous task. According to Randy Oliver, owner of Hollywood Crawford Door, a San Antonio garage door company, installing the door springs improperly can lead to serious injury. "I've been to many garages with blood stains on the garage floor because a homeowner tried to either install a door spring or tried to adjust one," Oliver says. "The spring has enough force to easily knock someone off a ladder and throw them down to the concrete floor. The torsion spring can unwind so quickly that you wouldn't be able to move or get out of the way in time to prevent injury."

The weight of the door is another major risk. Depending on the material they're made out of, some garage doors can weigh several hundred pounds. If a door were to fall during the installation process, it could lead to a major injury, or even death.
