French doors can spruce up any entrance

French doors first appeared as the door of choice for balcony openings in France during the 17th century. They have a panel on the inside that is surrounded by a frame. This panel is either clear or translucent. It is sometimes a single door, but is usually two separate doors that are connected to the walls on either side of the doorway so that they swing out from the middle.

They are usually found in the main entranceway of a home or leading to the back yard, patio or deck. Sometimes when they are used as the front door, there will be matching panels installed into the adjoining walls. They are sometimes used on interior doorways, such as the entrance to the master bedroom or a study.

There are many different styles of French doors and a variety of materials. The glass can be glazed to certain levels for privacy or left clear to take advantage of the sun’s warming rays. The frame can be carved with all sorts of interesting shapes, like leaves, fruit, vines or animals, to name a few.

Materials used in the frame of the door can be wood, vinyl, aluminum or PVC. This way you can find a French door to fit in with any decor. The nice thing about French doors is they make a room look bigger and this can add to the value of the house and the beauty of it.

Glass panels will be easier to break than a solid wooden door, but French doors are durable. If you want the look of a French door but do not have the space for it to open, sliding French doors are available. These will save space and add a nice touch.
