Flooring company allegedly installs inferior carpet

A bunch of fluff

COMPLAINT: Steve Wilson, Columbus, Ohio

"RAP Floorcoverings removed my old carpeting and installed new carpeting and pads throughout most of my house. I told RAP I wanted carpets at least as good or better than the carpet I was replacing, which had lasted many years. The salesman directed me to a polyester carpet he said would wear well and was stain-resistant.

"We never discussed a specific budget, but since I was purchasing so much carpet, he said he could give me a good deal. The lady who measured for the carpet told me I might sweep up some fluff for the first few sweepings. When I first complained about the shedding a few weeks after installation, the salesman said it might continue for two or three months.

"After seven months, I called RAP and filed a complaint. They sent out an inspector, who concluded nothing was wrong with the carpet. RAP sent out a second installation team to try to correct some of the problems. After eight months, it still sheds. This is the worst carpet I've ever had and the worst job of installation [I've ever seen]. Although they've been nice throughout the process, they sold me inferior carpet."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like compensation for my problems and replacement of the carpeting. I'd also like to have a certified flooring installer install any new carpeting."

STATUS: Resolved

Wilson informed Angie's List that RAP credited the price of the carpet and won't charge labor for the replacement, and he considers the case resolved.

Falling apart

COMPLAINT: Cheryl Link, Dublin, Ohio

"Mitchell Two Construction removed my old concrete driveway and replaced it with new concrete. The initial installation was good. The driveway looked great, and I was pleased with the job. Later, it began chipping. This contractor had installed two other driveways on my street, and they did the same thing.

"I contacted the contractor to let them know what was happening, and they looked at it, agreed it shouldn't be chipping and said I had probably received a bad mix of concrete. They said they would make it right.

"Since that time, we've had little contact unless I was calling them. They said the concrete company would be out to look at the driveway, but I haven't heard anything. I've contacted the Ohio Concrete Association to try to get the dispute resolved, but I haven't heard from them, either.

"The contractor may say it's going to be taken care of, but I'm concerned nothing will happen. The lack of communication is frustrating, and it's also frustrating to watch a $5,300 driveway disintegrate."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like to have the driveway replaced with acceptable concrete."

STATUS: Penalty Box

Timber!

COMPLAINT: Dianna Jaynes, Westerville, Ohio

"Jim's Tree Service cut down three trees and trimmed a few branches on another. Logs hit my new roof twice when they cut down one of the trees. The person who installed the roof came out and said a tile was broken and that I have a leak spot on the ceiling below the broken tile. Jim's Tree Service doesn't have the same phone number now, so I haven't been able to reach them."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like the $400 it cost to repair the roof."

STATUS: Penalty Box

Waiting for payment

COMPLAINT: Jan Weisenberger, Reynoldsburg, Ohio

"USA Insulation installed foam insulation in my brick home. When they were drilling through the brick, they cut through two phone lines on the outside walls of the house, damaging both. I hired a phone company to repair the lines, and USA Insulation said they'd pay for the repairs. Now, they refuse to pay."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like them to refund me the $100 I paid the company to repair the lines."

STATUS: Resolved

Weisenberger informed Angie's List that USA Insulation sent her a check.
