Overeating can cause people to experience stress, which can lead to a common cycle of stricter diets that end in binge-eating episodes. Right after a big meal, stress can cause even more bloating.
Stress releases hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol that speed up your pulse rate. Inflammation in the digestive system occurs, causing stomach pains, lack of appetite and nausea. Stress can also cause of digestive conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Don't be hard on yourself for eating too much. Dwelling on one meal doesn't have to prevent you from reaching your true dietary and lifestyle goals. Spending time with family at holiday parties can tempt anyone to overindulge. Don't consider eating on these occasions a sign of failure in your attempt to accomplish weight loss goals. Instead, make a plan to get back on track.
Don't skip breakfast the next morning to make up for the extra calories in your previous evening's meal. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and skipping it will only cause more binging later.
Make small reachable steps and think about lifestyle choices. Diets are short-term. You want to look after your weight and digestive health for the long-term. For optimum weight loss, several small meals during the day will increase your metabolism. This is also the best way to prevent the bloating that follows eating larger portions.
Foods that help digestion include yogurt, bananas, whole grains and anything containing fiber. Your gastroenterologist may have more suggestions based on your specific eating habits. Ask one of the more than 50 highly rated gastroenterologists in San Antonio, for example.
Never do rigorous exercise right after a meal. Blood flow directs your digestive tract to break down food you've just eaten. When you exercise after a meal, the blood flows to your muscles rather than the digestive tract, which hinders the digestion and may cause cramping. If you really want to exercise after overeating, wait at least one hour.
