Decatur moving company neither quick nor easy

COMPLAINT: Marlene Fox, Citrus Springs, Ga.

"I hired Quick Easy Movers to move me from Kentucky to Florida. They showed up late in a rental truck. They told me they wouldn't be picking up any more loads, but apparently they were late because they'd picked up another load on the way.

"They asked for payment before they unloaded the truck. I asked, "What happens if there's any damage?" But they wouldn't let me see my things before I paid. Almost every piece of furniture had scratches or big dents.

"The top of my armoire came off and was scratched. They said it would have happened no matter who had moved it, despite the fact I've moved it several times with no problems.

"A wheel had also come off an antique tea cart, and they told me they put it in a drawer somewhere. After this, they departed so fast they left their moving blankets in the garage.

"I've left several messages with a supervisor, but they won't return my calls. They also claimed I was $700 over the weight allotment. I've requested a copy of the weight statement, but they have refused.

"Had I had another choice at the time I saw the rental truck, I wouldn't have used them. But after calling their office, I was assured they were insured. If I had any problem, it would be taken care of."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I would like a copy of the weight ticket before and after they picked up the other load. I would like $1,000 to cover the damage, stress and money I paid for excess weight. I also want someone to pick up their moving blankets."

RESPONSE: George K., operations manager, Quick Easy Movers

"Payment is required before unloading. The goods were conveyed under the 60-cents-per-pound option. The $1,000 requested has no basis. Claims have been disposed of according to the option chosen by the shipper.

"A check for compensation will be issued once shipper returns claims acceptance form. Movers have up to 120 days to dispose of a claim."

Tips for a smooth moving experience

Michelle and Chris Graham were building a new home on the Boston outskirts when they hired a local moving company, Monster Movers, Inc., to deliver their possessions into storage. "We should have known there was trouble when [the bill] was inflated from the original estimate," Michelle says. "But they said the prices had just gone up, and to pay because 'we have your stuff now.'"

While we were not involved in this move it is worth explaining a few things so customers can avoid this type of issue when they move. #1 most movers combine multiple customers on a truck when moving out of town. If you don't want that service ask for and confirm in writing "exclusive use" of the truck (this is the term that is used in moving business for only your items on the truck). Also ask for a written clarification for the level of coverage of your items for your move. All legal movers carry insurance but if you choose .60 per pound your items are basically not covered. So just asking is a mover insured does not really clarify for you what you want to know and that's how will my stuff be covered for my move. Research and questions before a move go along way towards a positive and expected out come.
