Cracked windshield? Get it repaired quickly

It can take only a second: You're driving on the street or highway and hear the dreaded 'tink' of a pebble or rock striking your vehicle's windshield.

If you discover a crack or chip in your windshield, take immediate action to have it fixed as soon as possible:  a cracked windshield can be a hazard to you and your loved ones. Not only is there a possibility that it can crack further and weaken the integrity of your windshield,  it can obstruct your view, making your moving vehicle a hazard for you and others on the road.

That's exactly the reason that many states and communities have laws or ordinances that prohibit driving with a cracked windshield.

Depending on the size or nature of the crack or chip, you may be able to save money by having it repaired, rather than replacing the entire windshield. If it’s smaller crack or chip, a strong clear epoxy can be applied that bonds the crack or chip together. The crack or chip may remain visible, but it won’t spread.

Here are some suggestions that can get you on the road to making your windshield whole again:

  • Contact your insurance carrier. Determine whether you insurance policy covers windshield damage. This will also give you an idea of how much you will have to pay out of pocket.
  • Prevent dirt or debris from getting into the crack. Dirt makes the crack more difficult to repair. You may be able to use clear tape so your view isn’t totally obstructed as you drive to the repair shop.
  • Don’t wash the vehicle. Believe it or not, water can make the damaged area crack further.
  • Avoid temperature extremes. Park in a garage or shady spot, as heat from the sun can cause the crack to weaken, which may make it grow. If it’s wintertime, heat up your car gradually; the sudden temperature increase on the cold glass can also cause an existing crack to grow.
  • Use a registered glass shop. A shop that's registered with the Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standards Council or one that employs National Glass Association-trained technicians can be a greater assurance of a quality replacement. You need to assess the extent of the damage, and you want the best people to do it. Cracks can be deceptive, running much longer and deeper than they initially appear.
  • Avoid slamming doors. Close the doors gently to prevent additional pressure on the vehicle.
  • Read up on reviews. Take the time to research consumer feedback and make the right hiring decision by looking up auto glass companies in your area on Angie's List.
