Consider a house cleaner to tackle tough stains

For $100 a month, Jill's Cleaning Service, a highly rated Boston house cleaning company, cleans Gretchen Heid's house from top to bottom.

"From the second they enter the house, they are a whirlwind of cleaning activity," Heid says. "I am always impressed at how hard they work and how beautiful our house looks when they are done."

Professional house cleaners know all the tips and tricks to remove some of the most difficult substances. If you spend a lot of time in the bathroom coiffing the perfect hairstyle, you probably use hairspray to ensure your look lasts throughout the day or night. Though the hairspray can perfect your look, the residue can often stick to walls and other bathroom surfaces, causing a hard, sticky buildup.

Donna Brown, of FairyDust Services – a highly rated house cleaning company in St. Petersburg, Fla., says a general purpose cleaner and a wet, scruffy pad should erase any evidence of hairspray use.

Brown says to rub the pad “very gently in a circular motion.” This is the house cleaner’s secret trick to cleaning up the stubborn spray, and she says it’s “usually a fool-proof method.”

Fellow Tampa house cleaner Joanne Braccio, owner of Maid to Order, says a combination of ¼ cup of rubbing alcohol mixed with 1 quart of water is the best green solution to remove hairspray buildup from walls, countertops or mirrors.

“If you’re not looking for a green solution, I found that Scrubbing Bubbles works well,” she says of the over-the-counter cleaning solution. Braccio warns if you use the solution on mirrors, “Make sure to clean with a vinegar and water solution to remove any residue.”

Consider hiring a professional house cleaner if you have trouble spots in your house. Irina Beliaeva turned to Angie's List to find a cleaner after her usual New York City tri-state area house cleaner canceled on short notice.

"I found Kim's Cleaning Service on Angie's List and requested an appointment," Beliaeva says. "Kim responded right away and we were able to schedule an appointment later that week."
