Company makes custom mattresses to fit antique beds
There are few things in a home more personal than a bed. And, there are companies — like Indiana-based and highly rated Holder Mattress Company — that take it a step further and make mattresses to suit individual needs, styles and furniture.
“The possibilities are pretty much endless because all our mattresses are made-to-order — they’re all custom,” says Lauren Taylor, commercial manager for Holder.
From round to heart-shaped, custom mattresses can come in many forms and can also be made to accommodate different levels of support. However, Taylor says clients are typically looking for a unique mattress size.
"We make mattresses and box springs for vintage and antique beds daily," Taylor says. "When someone buys or inherits a bed like that, they usually mistake it for a full size, only to find it won't fit." Because of this common mistake, Taylor says it's important to measure the bed frame accurately before purchasing or ordering a mattress.
Indianapolis member Elisabeth Culp ordered a custom mattress for an antique baby bed from the Holder Mattress Company. "The bed is a family heirloom," Culp says. "We don't really know it's history, but both of my babies used it as newborns so it means a lot to me."
A little added expense is standard when you buy bedding for a custom mattress.
Taylor suggests having the bedding custom made, too, or buying one size larger and having it altered.

Culp had the mattress made out of non-allergenic materials because she's hoping her future grandchildren will use the bed, too. The new mattress fits the bed perfectly and is about 3 and a half inches thick. Because of the mattress's tiny size, Culp only paid about $67 and she says the mattress was finished in a week.
According to Taylor, an adult-sized custom mattress typically cost $150 to $500 more than the standard sized mattresses and can take anywhere from three to four weeks to complete - with the unique shapes taking even longer.
While a round bed may seem like a novel idea, Taylor warns sometimes that sort of customization isn't always practical. "They're mostly for novelty and not for sleeping," Taylor says.
"The most important aspect of a mattress is the way it feels - not just the way it looks."
