Combat wrinkles with the right cosmetics and sunscreen
Looking youthful is something most people long to achieve. Reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your skin requires taking good care of your skin well before the first sign of aging appears.
So for those in their 20’s and 30’s, investing in high-quality skincare products with SPF in them will reduce signs of aging later in life. Seattle dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Reichel suggests, “The absolute most important thing you can do to prevent wrinkles and age spots is to protect your skin from the sun.”
Most department store makeup counters offer foundations and powders with SPF. These products are made with zinc, which acts as a diffuser for the sun’s rays. When searching for products with SPF, look for broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
SPF makeup provides a good addition to your wrinkle-fighting arsenal, but most dermatologists suggest that it won’t do the job on its own. It isn’t enough to simply care for your face, because aging spots can affect skin on your entire body.
Wrinkle-causing UVA rays can penetrate glass and clothing, so it is important to wear SPF on your entire body. Dr. Stephen Maberry, a Dallas-area dermatologist who is highly rated on Angie's list, advises that one uses sunscreen or moisturizer with a minimum SPF of 15 daily. Choose a product that feels comfortable, so you’ll actually use it.
If your sun exposure will be more than incidental, like walking to and from your car, the SPF in makeup is not potent enough. Many dermatologists recommend coupling a SPF foundation or powder with a sunscreen underneath to double your protection.
Although sunscreen is the number one way to prevent wrinkles, you can also reduce their appearance by a careful skin care regimen. Using a gentle exfoliator and following up with moisturizing cream can keep your skin looking fresh and youthful. Also, drinking plenty of water and eating foods rich in antioxidants will slow the aging process for your skin.
