What are the advantages to having hardwood flooring in your home?
"Resale value - hardwood flooring always adds value to your home. It's also good for individuals who have allergies. Carpet tends to trap dust and dust mites and to aggravate allergies. Hardwood flooring is easier to clean and maintain. You're going to dust it regularly. When you feel there's a need, there's a mist cleaner you can mist on and wipe up."
What do you do when you refinish hardwood flooring?
"The room has to be emptied of all furniture or existing carpeting and sealed off for any dust that escapes. We use a 95-percent dust-containment system. We sand the floor, apply the stain and apply two coats of polyurethane, which can be oil-based or water-based. I prefer an oil-based polyurethane - I feel like it's a heaver coat - but a lot of people would prefer water-based. It's just a matter of preference. We have stains customers can choose from, and we can custom-match stains. If someone has railings that are a certain color and they want the floor to match, we can do that.
"One room could take two to three days. It depends on the stain - a light stain tends to dry faster, while a dark stain sometimes requires a second application. If we're doing the whole house, the customer needs to plan to move out during the process. You have the smell, and the floor needs time to dry. A good time to plan this is when they're on vacation."
Can you remove most etches or stains from hardwood floors? Is there any type you can't remove?
"It depends on what's been spilled and how much. If you have a window leaking for an extended period of time, it's going to warp and then stain the floor. We can remove all surface scratches - it just depends on how much of the floor you want us to sand away.
"Severe water damage that causes the floor to cup or buckle can't be sanded out, but we can take the boards out and put new ones in. We sometimes can't sand out pet stains because of the acid in urine."
What can homeowners do to maintain their hardwood flooring?
"Remove your shoes when you enter the room. Keep walk-off mats on the floor. If you're going from the kitchen floor to hardwood flooring, have a rug there to catch some of the dirt on your feet. Put felt pads under chair legs. For items you don't want to be moved, like a table, you can cut a piece of rubber shelf liner and put that under the legs."
