Columbus chapel the first built expressly for funerals in city
Loving House
229 E. State St.
The core of this building was once the home of the famous Columbus physician, Dr. Starling Loving. Loving was a renowned dean at the Starling Medical College, which eventually became The Ohio State University Hospital. His great-uncle, Lyne Starling, bought the land in 1809, and business tycoon John Joyce first built on it during the Civil War.
Loving purchased the property in 1884. When he died in 1911, his daughter and son-in-law moved into the house and lived there for several years. In 1918, the Schoedinger Company built a funeral chapel at the site, incorporating the original Loving home. This was the first chapel in Columbus built expressly for funeral services. - Shirley Hyatt
