Check delay causes confusion after electrical work

COMPLAINT: Carmelo Pupillo, Lithia, Fla.

"I hired Electric Today Inc. of Brandon [Fla.] to install some electrical components in my café. They did an exceptional job, and I paid for their services with a $575 check. Due to my neglect, the check was returned. I issued a new check that cleared a week later.

"Two days after that, there was [another] electronic withdrawal from my account for the same amount, which I did not authorize. My bank traced the funds and found that Electric Today's bank had received the funds from my bank and placed them in their account."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want the $575 returned."

RESPONSE: Jerauld Polizzi, owner, Electric Today Inc.

"The member's check was returned due to insufficient funds. The member issued a new check and it cleared shortly after. Our bank has a program to recover funds as soon as they become available in the check writer's account.

"However, when our bank redeposited the original returned check, it was grouped with that day's total deposit and I didn't discover it until I reconciled that month's financial statement.

"I called the member to resolve the situation, but I didn't receive a response. I'll be happy to refund the $575."

STATUS: Resolved
