Charlotte closet specialist gives tips

After running several building and construction products businesses, Robert Coover was searching for a different kind of business that would take advantage of Charlotte's housing growth. But he still wanted it to be viable when new construction slowed down. That's when he started Closet Storage Concepts in 2001. "I love working with the clients, using my creativity to design the best closet systems for their space," Coover says.

What's the most common problem you see?

"The most common problem is wire shelving that's not adjustable. But overall, it's just that we all have too much stuff. Still, with the right organization, storing a lot of stuff efficiently is possible. More importantly, our organizing systems make it easier to stay organized. Most of my customers are female, but every once in a while the husband will get excited about the master closet. They say opposites attract, and this is very true when it comes to organized people. Inevitably, one spouse is neat and the other is messy. Frequently, I'll joke with customers who are obviously opposites that I do marriage counseling on the side."

What are the different types of closet systems you install?

"We install master and kids' closets, pantries, laundry rooms, home offices, garages and entertainment cabinetry. Most new homes have larger walk-in closets, but we deal with all kinds. A couple of organizing options include the double hang option, which is placing one short hang [rod] over another, while medium hang involves hanging medium-length dresses or pants by the cuff. We don't sell hangers, but right after we install your new closet is a great time to upgrade your hangers.

For shoes, one of the neatest solutions is shoe cubbies. The first step for deciding what the best setup is for each customer is assessing what's driving them crazy and measuring the client's existing clothes and shoes. The most popular closets people get installed are in the master bedroom, pantry and laundry/mudroom — which is quickly rising in popularity."

What's the installation process like?

"With us, it's typically a clean and hassle-free, one-day process. The only thing we need the customer to do is remove their clothes from the closet, which they can typically lay on the bed for the day we're there. From initial call to installation, it's typically one to two weeks. The cost really varies depending on the design. A small coat closet can run $100, while large walk-in masters can run $10,000 to $15,000. We custom manufacture all of our materials and do free consultations. Since we opened eight years ago, our business has been split between builders and homeowners."

Do you have any other suggestions to help people stay organized?

"Closet organization can add tremendous value to your home, as buyers are now paying attention to it. The best advice is to get the closet designer involved early in the planning stages of your project."
