Carolina Home Construction allegedly threatens homeowner with lien

COMPLAINT: Jonathan Rosenbaum, Charlotte

I first hired Carolina Home Construction of Stanley for my bathroom remodel and gave them half the money upfront. After six weeks with them doing nothing, I tried to fire them and get my money back, but they refused. For fear of losing my money, I asked them if they would roll it into a siding project instead, as this seemed to be more their area of expertise. They agreed to credit the money toward siding instead and canceled the bathroom project. While things were going well, I signed for them to do the roof, too. My insurance gave me $1,860 for the roof, which I used to pay Carolina Home Construction. Two days later, the owner wanted us to give him an advance on the final payment for the siding project. I told him no and he threatened to put a lien on our house. I gave in, but this act made me decide to fire him from the roof project and ask for our insurance money back since no work had been done or materials ordered. Six weeks later, I still haven't received a refund.

DESIRED RESOLUTION: I would like a $1,860 refund for the roof project. I would like to also be credited for the final $500 on the siding project as it cost at least that amount to hire someone to finish the work.
