Best Indianapolis Contractors of 2010
Lyon Glass Block LLC | Indianapolis
In business since 2005, it's the third year in a row that Lyon Glass Block is recognized as one of Indianapolis' Best Contractors, and owner Nick Lyon plans to continue the streak. "It's great," he says. "I want to earn it for another seven years and get 10 in a row."
If the four-time Super Service Award winner continues his company's track record of what Angie's List members describe as speedy response times, low prices and above-and-beyond service, that's entirely possible.
Donna Hostettler of Indianapolis says she experienced all of those attributes firsthand when she called Lyon for an estimate to replace a broken dryer vent that was part of her basement's glass block window. "He called me back in 10 minutes and dropped by to look at it the same day," she says.
After determining her particular glass block was no longer available, she says Lyon returned the next day with a new custom- fit dryer vent he reconfigured from his own home's dryer vent - and charged her only $25. "It was way over and above what I expected," Hostettler says, adding that she expected to pay up to $375 to replace the window.
"I just do what I say and stick by it," Lyon says. "It's just about taking pride in what you do, and I'm going to make sure that happens no matter what."
Lyon says that although follow-up service is rarely needed, his commitment to quality goes beyond the installation: "If a customer ever has a problem, I'm there as quickly as I can," he says. "You never know how good a company is until something messes up."
That commitment to customer satisfaction led to 10 Page of Happiness nominations in the last year. Lyon's work, which doesn't require a license, also benefits the environment. When possible, he recycles metal window frames after they're removed.
Indy Inspection Service Inc. | Indianapolis
Rich Able's home inspection service earns its second year of recognition as one of Indianapolis' Best Contractors.
Angie's List members such as Mark Stall of Zionsville [Ind.], who recently hired the company to perform a pre-listing inspection, say it's Able's extreme attention to detail and thorough work ethic that makes his business stand out from the rest.
"I thought it would be a to 2- to 3-hour event," Stall says. "But he was extremely through and very thoughtful about what he looked at - it took more like 4 to 5 hours."
Able says it's all part of his unique approach to the job, which he gained after 30 years of experience in the construction industry. "That's my standard way of doing business," he says. "I don't think about it as being extra thorough. I've just always paid attention to the details."
That rigid focus has paid dividends with customers: Indy Inspection has earned the Super Service Award every year since 2006 and garnered 13 Page of Happiness nominations in the last year.
"The bottom line is he shows pride in what he does and cares very strongly about how well he does it," says Crystal Krebs of Carmel [Ind.], who hired the company to inspect her first home. "We needed a lot of hand-holding on how to maintain a home, and he was willing to explain everything. He sincerely cares about people."
Though it may take a little longer, Able says he sees the information he provides as vital to a home buyer or owner's judgment. "There's a lot of responsibility involved in explaining a home's problems to customers. It's not a burden, but I don't take it lightly," Able says. "I might not make as much as other home inspectors hour for hour, but I stay busy."
Members also say Able, who holds the required state licenses for home inspection, radon testing and termite inspections, is friendly around their pets.
Andy's Custom Painting Inc. | Indianapolis
"There's so much more to it than just holding a brush," says Andy's Custom Painting owner Andy Neis. "You really have to come through with what you promise the customer."
Neis lives up to his promises, according to Angie's List members, who consistently cite his attention to detail, frequent communication and tireless work ethic.
"I loved his work, not only the quality of it, but also his demeanor and communication," says Indianapolis resident Lori Behrmann, who hired Neis for an exterior paint job. "I can't say I've ever had a better contractor," she says.
Angie's List members nominated Andy's Custom Painting, whose work doesn't require a license, for a Page of Happiness 11 times in the last year. Neis also offers customers low-VOC products, and properly disposes leftover materials that may be toxic to the environment.
Service Plus Heating & Air Conditioning | Brownsburg, Ind.
Honest advice and great customer service are two reasons Angie's List members say Service Plus consistently earns their praise. Owner Chris Cunningham says his company's focus on those principles falls in line with its founding philosophy.
"When we started, we knew there was a disconnect between the service customers received and what they wanted to receive," he says. "Our goal was to bridge that gap."
Kimberly Schoeff of McCordsville [Ind.], who recently hired the company for a maintenance inspection, says they've done that and more. "In the spectrum of service, they were in the top 2 percent," she says. She is one of 11 members who nominated the company for a Page of Happiness in 2010.
Service Plus, which holds a Marion County HVAC contractor license, donates time and equipment to charities such as Habitat for Humanity. They also recycle old equipment and refrigerants, and install energy-efficient heaters and air conditioners.
