Some common maintenance issues with garage doors include squeaky hinges, broken springs, stripped gears and snow and ice and water covering the photo sensors, which can keep the garage from shutting.

Garage door inspections should include:

  • Adjusting of springs and cables
  • Lubricating moving parts
  • Tightening of all hardware, track and hinges
  • Inspecting the safety sensors and opener gears
  • Troubleshooting any other issues

  • Knowing the different parts of your garage door can help you stay on top of maintenance and replacement.

Lubricate with silicon which last longer than just WD 40 ect.

would you recommend spraying foam insulation on the back of the door?

Good visual information, but the article quit way too early. I'd like more-specific information on maintenance to perform on the door, how to replace a single bent door panel without having to replace the entire door, etc.

I'm for fixing a bent garage door, too.

Angie's List is not about, DIY it's about not getting ripped off by a contractor.

Interested in straightening a bent metal part of door not shown in picture

I would like to know what good tension should look like for the springs and cables so I can do myself.
