Have a friend or family member who's moved into a new home? Consider these ideas for housewarming gifts, presented in reverse alphabetic order:

Wine and wine glasses: Bringing a bottle of wine is a nice gesture that can become even more appreciated when it includes wine glasses. For people in the midst of unpacking, wine glasses may not be immediately accessible. Another idea along the same lines is to bring champagne and have flutes engraved so they can serve as a memento of the new home.

Towels: Whether you buy bathroom towels, beach towels or kitchen towels, these are a handy gift. A towel warmer is another great idea.

Tools: Most first-time homeowners would appreciate a small set of tools. Even if they have some, an extra set for the kitchen can come in handy.

Magazine subscription: Pick a magazine the new homeowner will enjoy and have it sent to the new address. This is a gift that keeps giving throughout the year. Present the new homeowner with the current issue along with the subscription notice.

Gift card: A gift card to a home improvement or home accessory store is a terrific housewarming gift. Another good option is a gift card for a local grocery store or restaurant that you know is good.

Food: Present the new homeowner with a plate of cookies or a basket of pantry staples, fruit or a full meal. If your friends have children, include something just for them.

Decorative candles: Scented candles are inexpensive, easy to find and make a practical housewarming gift. If you do not know the recipient's tastes, choose a color and scent that suits the season.

Coffee table book: If you know the person well, you can gear the book toward her interests. For everyone else, a book full of great photography tends to be a safe bet.

Angie's List membership: If you're a member of Angie's List, you can buy a gift membership for another at a reasonable price. If you're not a member, consider giving yourself the gift of resources for great hiring. Angie's List members have access to local consumer reviews on service providers in more than 550 other categories, including "Gifts."
