6 ways to save money on your Los Angeles move
Moving can be a costly endeavor, especially if you’re utilizing professional help.
In 2011, Angie’s List was searched more than 4,000 times for Los Angeles moving companies. While there are many highly rated movers on the list who will help transport your belongings from point A to B, there are six easy ways to save money on your final bill.
1. Don't pay for packing materials. Purchasing boxes can add up, so don't buy them. Instead, ask friends or neighbors if they have extras. Ask local grocery or discount stores if they have any you can have. Often times, stores will be happy to let you take them off their hands. Use newspaper, tissue paper, towels or blankets to wrap fragile or breakable items.
2. Pack your own boxes. Packing can take days or weeks, depending on how many rooms and how much stuff you are moving, but it’s a good way to save money on your move. Since most moving companies charge by the hour, this will significantly reduce the amount of time you’ll be charged.
3. Reduce and recycle. The less stuff you have, the less the movers have to load and unload. While packing your boxes, consider donating gently used items or things you haven't needed in a while. It will make your move go quicker and your new home seem less cluttered.
4. Have your boxes sorted, stacked and ready to go. If your boxes are all in a central location - preferably closest to the door the movers will use - this will make loading the truck easier. The quicker the movers can get the boxes in the truck, the sooner they are driving your belongings to your new home.
5. Ask for a discount. Even if one's not offered, it never hurts to ask. Check the Internet for any advertising the company may have done, as coupons or discounts are often attached.
6. Write it off. Certain moves are tax-deductible, so ask your tax agent if your move qualifies for any exemptions.
