Wanting to try a new approach to running? Follow these tips to make a safe transition to minimalist shoes:
- Talk to your coach, trainer or podiatrist about whether going barefoot or minimalist is right for you. Your age, fitness level and history of injury should be considered in the decision.
- Concentrate on the basics: improve your running form. This will prevent injury, no matter what shoe you wear. Add foot-strengthening exercises to your training.
- Gradually transition to the minimalist shoe. Some get acquainted to the shoe by wearing it in their daily life, only later adding it to their training regimen.
- Test out the barefoot route. Consider going barefoot around your home, or regularly run a short course on an area that's free of hazardous debris.
