3-week painting job turns into more than a year

COMPLAINT: Steve Zisser, Bexley, Ohio

"MC Painting & Deck Restoration Inc. painted my house, front porch, back porch and detached garage, including the trim, windows and doors for $2,500.

"It was supposed to be a three-week job, but it took more than a year and a half to complete.

"The subcontractors were ill-kept, had a broken power washer, didn't use drop-cloths or clean up after themselves, left stains on several cement areas and often didn't show up.

"I called several times to complain. Finally, Chris Cox, the owner, spoke with me and agreed with my list of complaints. However, I never heard back from him.

"The company advertised that before someone writes them a check, they ensure all work will first be done properly. After I received a $400 invoice from them, I sent them a letter quoting their advertisement. A few months later, I received a call from a different subcontractor. He never showed.

"When a crew eventually did come to paint, they tried to power wash the stains the original subcontractor left behind, but their machine wasn't strong enough, so when they returned another day with a stronger power washer, they knocked out some caulking in the process.

"I asked for a price adjustment, since this job had already taken more than one year to complete. They offered me a $400 discount for the inconvenience but didn't state it would cancel their three-year warranty.

"I later called them about their warranty when most of my garage paint began peeling. MC Painting notified me that if I did not pay their bill in full, I would be negating their warranty.

"I informed them I never received a letter regarding the conditions of accepting a discount on the work. I have since not received any response from them. They do not stand behind their work."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I would like MC Painting to completely scrape, prep and repaint my entire garage and its windows, and repair the areas on the house affixed with blue tape, or provide me with a $2,000 refund, so I may hire another painter to perform the job properly."
