Is there an Angie?
Angie HicksAngie Hicks
Founder and Chief Marketing Officer of Angie's List

Of course there's a real Angie. Angie Hicks founded the List in 1995 with 1000 members in Columbus, Ohio. Since then our modest list of homeowners has spread into 124 cities with over 650,000 members. While Angie remains the keeper of the List, our members are the ones who submit reports to build the List and keep it current. As Chief Marketing Officer, Angie now focuses on promoting the company, opening new markets and assuring that all of the reports are up-to-date and helpful. She is a mother of 3 and lives a very busy and happy life with her husband in Indianapolis, Indiana.

How do companies get on the List?
A service company gets on the List only after a member submits a report about their experience with that company. We should say again that companies can not pay to be put on the List.
To Top

Does Angie's List allow service companies to advertise?
We do invite some service companies to advertise in our monthly magazine and on our website. However, those companies must be highly rated by our members, meaning they have to have an overall grade of A or B. Their advertisements are displayed on Angie's List in the form of exclusive coupons and discounts for our members. Service companies are not obligated to advertise, nor does their decision to advertise affect their Angie's List rating. Further, if a company's rating falls below a B grade, we revoke their advertisement. If you have any questions about our advertising policies, give us a call at 1-888-888-LIST.

Is there a membership fee?
Yes... and no. In most of our cities, homeowners pay a membership fee to join Angie's List. Angie's List is a premium service. Homeowners pay for reliable data, actual staff support and a monthly magazine, among other things. In new cities, where we're still building the List, homeowners can join for one year free. After the first year, they have the option, not obligation, to renew at the regular monthly or annual price.

Here's a breakdown of our membership payment plan options:

Monthly Payment Plan: Our monthly payment plan provides an opportunity to become a member with the lowest upfront cost possible. It also allows budget conscious consumers an opportunity to spread the cost of their membership over 12 calendar months. Members who choose the monthly plan enjoy continuous service billed to their credit card each month. Finally, members who chose the monthly payment plan may cancel their subscription or change to an annual membership at any time. Sorry, no refunds.

Annual Payment Plan: Our annual payment plan provides uninterrupted access to our service for an entire year (or more). Members who choose an annual payment option enjoy significant discounts, and their investment is protected by our 110% money-back guarantee. If an annual subscriber is dissatisfied with our service, we refund 110% of his/her membership fee. Thus, it's a risk- free way to try us out! Members who choose the annual plan also enjoy continuous service billed to their credit card. However, annual subscribers receive a notice about two months prior to their membership's expiration date reminding them of the date upon which their membership will be automatically renewed if we do not hear from them prior.

View membership fees here.

**All Angie's List members pay a one-time Signup Fee when their membership is activated. Members are not charged this fee again, unless they choose to re-activate their membership after their MONTHLY subscription has been expired for 30 days or their ANNUAL subscription has been expired for more than 180 days.

Does Angie's List offer a trial membership?
When Angie's List is new to your city we offer a free one-year membership for the first few months we're in the area. Members who sign up during this time period help us build the List. After your first year, you'll have the option, not obligation, to renew your membership at the regular monthly or annual price.

In cities where we've been around for a while you have to pay for a membership. But annual memberships do provide a money-back guarantee.

Why would I use Angie's List when I can just ask my neighbors for recommendations?
Naturally, you probably will ask your neighbors for their opinions. That's what being a neighbor is all about. What Angie's List can give you that your neighbors can't, is unbiased experience with hundreds of companies.

What if I sign up and don't like it?
Like this would ever happen. But if you're a member with an annual membership, we have a 110% money-back guarantee.

How do I renew my Angie's List membership?

Monthly Payment Plan: Each month, monthly membership dues are billed to the credit card on file at Angie's List. Monthly renewal payments take place on each member's expiration date (which can be found on the My Angie's List page of the website). If the first attempt to renew a membership fails, an auto renewal program attempts to process the renewal for approximately 30 days. No reminder notices are sent to members who have chosen the monthly payment plan. Cancellation requests must be received no later than 5pm on the day prior to any scheduled renewal payment.

Annual Payment Plans: Annual membership dues may be renewed by credit card, cash or check. Most members who choose to pay by credit card are also enrolled in our auto renewal program. These members receive a reminder notice approximately two months prior to their membership's annual expiration date. The notice reminds members that we will renew their membership using the credit card on file unless we receive a cancellation request prior to the scheduled renewal date. If the first attempt to renew a membership fails, an auto renewal program attempts to process the renewal for approximately 90 days. Members that would like to opt out of the auto renewal program may do so by contacting Angie's List via phone, fax, e-mail or US mail. Members that do not participate in the auto renewal program receive a paper renewal notice approximately 2 months prior to their membership's expiration date. These members may then pay by credit card, cash or check at their convenience.

What is a Credit Card Validation Code?
A credit card validation code is a 3 or 4 digit number printed on your credit card. This number is used as an anti-fraud security feature to help verify that you are in possession of your credit card. For Visa and Mastercard the three-digit Credit Card Validation number is printed on the signature panel on the back of the card immediately after the account number. For American Express, the four-digit Credit Card Validation number is printed on the front of the card above the card account number. Angie's List (or anyone, for that matter) is not allowed to store this information.

Why is Angie’s List accepting ratings for health care providers?
People come to Angie’s List seeking perspective on all kinds of projects. Our members have been telling us for years they’d like to give, and to get, this same kind of perspective when it comes to health care. We believe that everyone (members and health care providers) can benefit from the sharing of this feedback.
To Top

What is the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and how does it affect members who give reports?
HIPAA was enacted in 1996 to ensure standardization and protection of patient data; click here for more information. Any member who submits a report related to their health care issues is free to do so; his/her identity is available only to Angie’s List, and to the provider being reported on.
To Top

Can health care providers respond to member reports?
We encourage all providers to review and respond to their reports. However, health care providers operate under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which is intended to protect patient privacy. As a result, any responses they submit will not be detailed, and members should bear this in mind when reviewing their ratings.
To Top

Should I rely on Angie’s List ratings as my only resource of health care information?
Absolutely not. The perspectives of our members, while valuable, are no substitute for the advice of a qualified professional. We also provide a list of resources members can use to research the issues that concern them, so they can become more informed patients.
